GET TO KNOW THE FOUNDER – Clint McGill
How did you get started with Old World Traditions?
It’s funny, I get this question a lot. People don’t encounter faux wood beam salesmen very often I guess, hahaha.
I have a background in the building material industry – my father worked for a lumber company in California – and I spent every summer sweeping floors, driving forklifts and restocking racks of poplar, alder, melamine, you name it.
In 2007 I found myself in Fort Worth after chasing my now wife across the country and saw an opportunity in the faux beam biz! It was a product that looked great, was a good solution for the customer and really, I just thought the product was cool – I didn’t want to spend my time offering something boring.
There were some lean years to start but it’s 2016 and the company has grown more than I could have possibly imagined, God is good!!!
What excites or inspires you most about your work?
I like talking with the customers. 99% of the general population have no clue what faux beams are (people call in about our “fox beams” all the time, ha) so I enjoy educating them and hearing about their project.
I also enjoy the large commercial projects, just because the opportunity to provide value is so high – we can suggest a small tweak here or there that can be such a huge benefit.
But what I probably enjoy the most is when you get to know the customer. It doesn’t always happen as everyone has places to get to but whenever I talk with a customer and we just get off topic and talk about their day or something going on in their life – when I look back at the end of the day those are the moments that I usually enjoy the most.
What would you be doing if you weren’t at Old World Traditions?
I’d probably be a baseball coach. I played minor league ball with the Astros and I do miss it from time to time. But I have the best of both worlds, I get to coach my son’s team so I can get my baseball fix helping him and his buddies!
